This project reflects my broader research into contemporary and historical instances of 'queer' approaches to art production. These approaches may relate to gender and sexuality specifically, or to ways of living and doing which are informed by a resistance to mainstream pressures to conform. The 'local' referred to in the curatorial statement for Palimpsest #9 can be an important unifying element in any community, but it must be a 'local' which is open to diversity and inclusivity or it threatens to become parochial and xenophobic. This project will be informed specifically by my own experience of growing up as a queer youth in a regional Australian community and reflect upon the fact that young members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community are six times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual peers. Despite these serious reflections, the work itself will contain elements of humour and light heartedness: a curiosity that aims to create in viewers an enhanced sense of their own reality.
